2019 California Coast Trip

Remembering our trip to the coast admist COVID

UCI Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Irvine mentors on a spring break trip.

Lately I have been thinking about the California Coast Trip that we took in 2019. This year, we were supposed to go on a Sister’s Trip to the Coast, but unfortunately, the trip was cancelled due to COVID-19. It is during these times, when we have to stay at home, that you look back to those fun trips that you went on.

I remember how we had a lot of fun driving down. We drove up from UC Irvine to see our friends in Santa Barbara the first night, and when we woke up, we were greeted with the best breakfast burritos! One of the best parts about staying with friends, besides the amazing fellowship and HILARIOUS stories that get shared, is the amazing food that we are spoiled with.

After our short stop in Santa Barbara, we drove up to our get-away home in Monterey Bay. It was many peoples first time visiting the house in Monterey, and I think we were all taken aback. The view was beautiful, and it was exactly what we needed: A time to get away from the studying, away from our phones, and a time to have fellowship.

Highlights of the trip were riding bikes near Canary Row (shout out to all my English major, Steinbeck loving friends) and our family time in the evening where we shared stories, and got to witness Joe (the pastor) “serve it up”, or basically give the biggest YES in his life, to having the same favorite ice cream flavor as others in the room. . .   yes, we are passionate about our ice cream here at A2F. . .

Most of all, what stood out in this trip was the fun time we had with people. It did not matter if the pasta took forever to boil or how much we drove, we enjoyed spending time in each other’s company. We just enjoyed people. During this time of Shelter-In-Place that is what I miss the most.

It can be easy to despair and be sad while we are away from our friends, but I am grateful for our church in Irvine. I am grateful that even if I only see people’s faces on Zoom or 6ft away in the doorway that I know they are always there for us if we need them.
