Halloween Hangout

Last Halloween, we continued our Christian fellowship’s yearly tradition of offering a fun alternative to college party culture and had a Halloween celebration! Rather than gathering by separate classes, like the year prior, our entire fellowship gathered for games and good food at a nearby church in Tustin, about 20 minutes away from UCI.

People really brought their Halloween spirit this year as costumes ranged from hazmat suits from Breaking Bad to a self-inflatable T-Rex to downright frightening use of makeup and face paint. Some groups even coordinated their costumes and we were visited by Christopher Robin and his friends from the 100 Acre Woods and Sector V from the Kids Next Door.

Not only did we eat a lot of very good (but very bad for you) food from deep frying everything under the sun - ice cream, onion rings, candy bars and more - but it was a night of many laughs. We tested our hand-eye coordination through popping (or at least attempting to pop) balloons with handmade paper blow darts. Tested our communication and listening skills as people tried to navigate a small rope obstacle with a pumpkin and blindfold while straining to hear their teammates through the echoing shouts of the entire room – who says that a Christian group can’t teach some practical skills? And we ended the night with a new annual tradition started last year by our pastor: pumpkin smashing! – which was a good way to relieve stress from Week 5 and the never-ending grind of midterms.

With everything that happened that night from the heavy fried food to pumpkin games to bringing back old playground favorites, jump rope and double-dutch, it was hard to believe that it was only a Thursday night and that we would all have to go back to classes and work the next day. Looking back at all the pictures and recounting these fond memories has me hoping for the day that we will all be able to gather like this again. To have a time of laughter and fellowship around a table with good food since that’s one of the things that I miss the most.
